Gael Clichy says he and his Arsenal team-mates have never given up hope of winning the Barclays Premier League title.

When the Gunners slipped to nine points behind leaders Chelsea last month, many wrote off their chances of clinching the prized piece of silverware.

Arsene Wenger’s side recovered from the double set-back of defeats against title rivals Manchester United and Chelsea, beating Liverpool, Sunderland and Stoke City in successive victories. With the Blues losing ground after their 4-2 home defeat to Manchester City on Saturday, Arsenal moved to within three points off the top spot.

And Clichy is not at all surprised to find his side in the hunt for Barclays Premier League glory once more.

He told the club’s official website: “People were saying we were not good enough, when we were playing Manchester United and we lost against Chelsea, but we kept the confidence really high because we know we have the players and the quality to do it.

“When you play for a team like Arsenal, you want to be the best and to be the best is to compete week-in, week-out against any team in the league.

“Of course, when you find yourself 11 points behind the leaders [as Arsenal were in November], you ask yourself: ‘It’s going to be really difficult. Are we capable of doing it?’ and a few weeks later you find yourself back in the title race and that’s a good feeling.

“So that shows you the character in the squad and, once again, with the players we have, I’m sure we can do it. It’s going to be difficult, but I’m sure we can.”

Aston Villa 1 – 2 Man United

Substitute Wayne Rooney made the decisive contribution in the Carling Cup final with a late winner as Manchester United beat Aston Villa at Wembley.

Rooney entered the action just before half-time to replace the injured Michael Owen and enabled Sir Alex Ferguson’s side to come from behind and retain the trophy.

Aston Villa’s Wembley showpiece started perfectly when James Milner put them ahead from the spot after five minutes following Nemanja Vidic’s foul on Gabriel Agbonlahor.

Villa clearly felt referee Phil Dowd should have sent Vidic off after he hauled down Agbonlahor as he closed in on goal – and their burning sense of injustice was fuelled even further when United quickly restored equality.

Richard Dunne lost possession to Dimitar Berbatov, and when he attempted to repair his error he could only find Owen, who slipped a perfect finish past Villa keeper Brad Friedel.

Owen looked sharp in front of watching England coach Fabio Capello, but his lingering hopes of persuading the Italian to include him in his World Cup plans for South Africa may have ended when he pulled up as he ran into the area and was forced to leave the action.

It was hardly good news for Villa as it allowed Rooney to come on, with the striker clearly desperate to make an impact after starting on the bench.

Ji-Sung Park hit the post for United before Rooney rose to head the outstanding Antonio Valencia’s cross past Friedel with 16 minutes left.

Rooney almost extended United’s victory margin when he hit the woodwork with another header, but his amazing season continued as his 28th goal of the campaign gave Ferguson another piece of silverware.

Vidic was fortunate to see Emile Heskey’s header deflect off him on to the bar late on, but by that stage United were firmly in control and well on the way to victory.

It was a bitter disappointment for Villa, who started so promisingly, but they tired as the game wore on at Wembley and United ultimately deserved their triumph.

Ferguson decided to rest Rooney, who has been in devastating form, from his starting line-up and give Owen his opportunity in a Wembley final that was to drag the England striker from one end of the emotional scale to the other.

Villa’s ploy was always going to be to test United with pace and power up front – and it was rewarded with the early goal boss Martin O’Neill must have craved.

Agbonlahor was too quick for Vidic and the United defender had already tugged at his shirt before hauling him down. Referee Dowd did not punish Vidic further, despite the fact that he was the last United defender and flirted with a red card, and Milner steered the penalty coolly past Tomasz Kuszczak.

Villa’s lead only lasted seven minutes, and it was an error from the normally reliable Dunne that led to United’s swift equaliser.

Dunne lost possession to Berbatov, and even though he recovered he could only divert the ball into the path of Owen, who steered an expert precision finish low past Friedel.

The game was remarkably open, with Milner a prominent figure, and he brought a fine diving save from Kusczcak with a 20-yard effort.

Owen had looked sharp, but his injury curse struck again as half-time approached when he pulled up as he raced for possession with Dunne in the area. It was clear immediately that his game was over and he walked away disconsolately to be replaced by Rooney.

United almost ended an enthralling first 45 minutes in the lead when Park struck a post after James Collins could only partially clear Valencia’s cross.

And United posed the first danger after the break when Friedel saved well from Michael Carrick, whose shooting had been very erratic up to that point.

The second half was much more of a cat-and-mouse affair, but predictably it was Rooney who gave United the advantage when he struck with 16 minutes left.

Berbatov cleverly played in Valencia, whose cross left Rooney with work to do, but not only did he win the aerial battle with the taller Collins, he sent a towering header high beyond Friedel into the top corner.

And the England striker almost repeated the feat three minutes later when Valencia was once more the provider, but he sent a more powerful header against the post.

Villa responded by introducing the giant figure of John Carew for Carlos Cuellar – and his presence almost forced Vidic into an error that resulted in an equaliser.

Stewart Downing’s cross caused confusion, and Vidic was lucky to see Heskey’s header bounce off his shoulder on to the bar.

United had one last anxious moment when another Downing cross was just out of Dunne’s reach at the back post, but Ferguson’s side held out for a deserved victory.

Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar has signed a new one-year contract.

The veteran Dutchman will now remain at Old Trafford until June 2011.

Van der Sar joined the Barclays Premier League champions from Fulham in June 2005 and since then has been a main stay between the sticks for the Red Devils. In that time he has made 143 appearances and last season spectacularly broke the Premier League’s consecutive clean sheets record.

And despite making only 11 appearances so far this term, he has impressed manager Sir Alex Ferguson enough to earn the offer of an extended stay at the club.

Van der Sar said: “I still feel good and am enjoying my football.”

The 39-year-old suffered two lengthy absences before being granted compassionate leave just before Christmas when his wife Annemarie suffered a brain haemorrhage.

He said: “This is a great club and I was shown a great deal of compassion and support during a difficult time in December and January for which I am extremely grateful. I am looking forward to winning more trophies with this great team.”

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was thrilled to tie up his first-choice goalkeeper for another year.

Ferguson told the club’s official website: “Edwin’s professionalism and dedication to his job and the way he looks after himself has given him the longevity in the game.

“That longevity includes such great experience not just at United, but at Juventus, Ajax and on an international level. We are absolutely delighted he is continuing for another year.”

It seems that of this week, Portsmouth will degradation from Premier League early. This verdict come out because their owner Balram Chainrai decide today (Friday 26/2) is the last deadline Portsmouth to get a new investor. Portsmouth hope the investor will give much money for pay their debt as big as more than 70 million pounds plus tax 18 million pounds. If fail, The Pompey must makes liquidation.

Because of this liquidation, Premier League will decrease 9 points for Portsmouth with 16 points they have, so hard for Portsmouth to hold out in Premier League. Portsmouth also must sale their players in the end of this season. But, Portsmouth says that they optimistic will finish with good results.

Last week I wrote that next year’s finals in South Africa could finally see a European team win the World Cup on terrain beyond the continental boundaries.

Having sat at home and watched closely as Friday’s draw unravelled, my belief that this will become a self-fulfilling prophesy has increased.

Looking at the draw on paper, I think as many as 10 of Europe’s 13 teams could make it through to the knock-out stages next summer and I’d also expect remarkably short odds on all-European semi-finals.

The draw could not have been much kinder to Spain, who Fifa have at the head of its own global rankings, holders Italy and, of course, England. Big guns like Germany and the Netherlands got rather more loaded groups but their coaches and players are still feeling confident that they can qualify for the last 16 and even go much further.

Spanish national sports daily As’ front page on Saturday reflected the mood of the nation.

“An easy group, then Cristiano (Ronaldo) or Kaka in the last 16,” commented the newspaper. Clearly the World Cup for Spanish football fans and pundits effectively starts more than two weeks later than for most other people, with a potential match up against their neighbours Portugal.

Spanish coach Vicente del Bosque has, not surprisingly, been trying to guard against complacency since the draw was made.

“Any time there can be surprises, Chile are probably our chief rivals, Honduras play well and Switzerland are a solid outfit. But my biggest worry is that my 23 first-choice players get to South Africa in good shape,” said Del Bosque.

However, despite Del Bosque’s best efforts to try to keep calm and hide his glee, television pictures on Friday showed him with a permanent grin beneath beneath his bushy moustache.

Italian coach Marcello Lippi cuts a less lugubrious figure and also came out with the predictable mantra of, “there are no easy games at the World Cup,” but the prospect of having to face New Zealand, Paraguay and Slovakia is unlikely to give him any sleepless nights.

Dutch football fans were also having a chuckle at their good fortune although Denmark and Cameroon (with Japan completing the group) could prove to be tougher opponents than Italy’s rivals.

“A lot of people will probably think that we will make it to the next round without too much trouble,” admitted Dutch coach Bert van Marwijk, although he did later add the usual qualifying remarks about how good his team’s group rivals are.

The common consensus is that the section involving Germany, Ghana, Serbia and Australia is one of the two cliched “Groups of Death”, but as the Real Madrid defender Christoph Metzelder pointed out on Saturday, “No one ever wants to face Germany either.”

For my money, Serbia might be the surprise package of the World Cup, starting with getting through this group alongside Germany.

Coach Radomir Antic has done a fantastic job since taking over in the summer of 2008, changing the whole style of play, utilising the wings and getting the best out of attacking midfielders Milos Krasic and Milan Jovanovic, the latter being Serbia’s top scorer during their qualification campaign.

France’s luck also continued. Inevitably the controversy about Thierry Henry’s handball will follow coach Raymond Domenech and his men all the way to Cape Town, where they play their opening fixture against Uruguay on 11 June.

However, they have come out of the pot against the weakest African team in the shape of the host nation, the weakest South American team who only just scraped through the play-offs themselves and Mexico, whose performances in the CONCACAF qualifiers were anything but convincing.

Of the rest of the European teams, who do I think will go through to the last 16?

I wouldn’t completely discount the chances of any of the remaining European teams but the odds seem to be against Greece and Slovakia on current form and the countries they have to play.

I have a feeling that Switzerland have been underestimated and they are my fancied country to also qualify from Spain’s group. The expected climatic conditions should favour Ottmar Hitzfeld’s team. Chile are a good team, as evidenced by them finishing just one point behind Brazil in the South American qualifying group, but they may just find the weather, to use the irresistible pun, just a bit chilly.

Denmark have a very good shot of progressing alongside the Netherlands from their group.

Morten Olsen, who has already announced that he will stand down as coach after being at the helm since 2000, doesn’t have any true world stars to call upon. Perhaps the leading name in terms of recognisability is Arsenal’s Nicklas Bendtner, the current Danish Player of the Year. However, the Danes have an especially competent defence, with Liverpool’s Daniel Agger at the core, and in topping a tough qualifying group only conceded five goals.

Even Slovenia could make it through alongside England. After beating Russia in the play-offs, they are certainly not going to be overawed by the likes of the United States and Algeria.

In contrast to the generally optimistic noises coming out of most parts of Europe in the last few days, the one country that has been sounding a more sanguine note is Portugal.

Having to face Brazil and Ivory Coast, arguably the two best teams from their continents, as well as North Korea, Cristiano Ronaldo commented rather gloomily, “I can’t be happy with this draw.”

Nevertheless, perhaps the Spanish papers this weekend were right, the World Cup effectively does start for the majority of European teams on 26 June, when the first games of the knock out stages will be played.
